What is estate planning?

There may come a time when you are unable to make decisions for yourself. It might seem like that time is far away, but do you want to take that chance?

Estate planning lets you determine who will make decisions regarding your medical treatment and finances if you are incapacitated, assign how your estate will be distributed after you are gone and help your intended beneficiaries avoid lengthy probate proceedings.

Five Documents Every Adult Should Consider

Depending on your age, wealth and family status, one or more of these documents might be more important than the others.

• Your Last Will and Testament names the people you want to receive your assets after your death. It also names the person who will become the guardian of minor children.
  
• A Durable Power of Attorney authorizes the person you name to make decisions on your behalf regarding financial matters.
  
• An Advanced Medical Directive, also called a Living Will, gives your directions for life-sustaining treatment if you are unable to communicate your wishes.
  
• A Durable Power of Attorney for Heath Care Decisions names the person who will make decisions regarding your medical treatment if you are not able to make decisions for yourself, or if you are not able to communicate your wishes.
  
• A Revocable Trust (also called a Living Trust) allows you to place assets in a trust to be given to your beneficiary without going through the probate process.
